Counselling

At some point in life everyone experiences difficult circumstances resulting in a diminished ability to live life to its fullest. Unresolved emotional pain can give rise to depression, anger, anxiety, low self-esteem, and abuse of self and others. Our counsellors combine their professional training and their Christian faith to bring healing and restoration to emotional, cognitive, behavioural and spiritual hurts. As professionals we serve people from many different cultural and religious backgrounds and are sensitive to the beliefs of each person.

WE CONSIDER IT A PRIVILEGE TO WALK THROUGH LIFE WITH YOU.

We are trained to counsel and support those who may be confronted by a variety of issues including (but not limited to):

  • grief/bereavement (e.g., loss of a loved one, separation and divorce, loss of job)
  • struggles in relationships – both at home or work
  • addictive patterns
  • sexuality and sexual identity
  • stress
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • interpersonal difficulties
  • self-esteem
  • career changes
  • difficulties adjusting to major life changes

By Peaceful Waters incorporates a number of therapeutic models into our work with individuals.

WE CUSTOMIZE A PROGRAM THAT WORKS FOR YOU

Child Counselling

Difficult circumstances not only touch adults but also affect the lives of children. Each child deals with life changes differently, and events such as separation and divorce, academic pressure, multicultural or religious differences, identity formation, or the loss of a pet may leave children feeling unsure of themselves. Many children are dealing with issues such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, learning disorders and behavioural issues. Childhood is no longer as carefree as once believed. At By Peaceful Waters we have therapists who specialize in guiding children toward mental, emotional and social wellbeing.  They have a passion to see children, happy, healthy and whole.

Teenage Counselling

Now more than ever life for teenagers is challenging. Teens are bombarded with mixed messages and conflicting demands from friends, parents, teachers, employers, coaches, and from their own expectations. Growing up is about negotiating a path between reliance on others and self dependence, but in our culture, it has become a tug of war for today’s teens. These pressures can often cause stress, depression, anxiety or other issues for young people.

By Peaceful Waters can support teens through complexities such as self-esteem issues, addictions, eating disorders, feelings of suicide and emotional turmoil.

Family Counselling

Sometimes families need help communicating with each other.  They need help to take a step back and look at issues from an outsider’s perspective.  Sometimes the balance of power needs adjusting, or families need a fresh approach in order to change deeply-rooted patterns.

Marital/Couple Counselling

Many couples experience times of stress in their relationship where they feel disconnected from each other and unsure about their future. This can stem from a variety of issues, including communication breakdowns, external stress, loss of job or health, competing priorities, financial hardship, infidelity or a thousand other unplanned circumstances.

Often couples attempt to cope with these issues alone, but like many things in life, a fresh and professional perspective can help resolution come more quickly and last a life time.  By Peaceful Waters can assist couples dealing with a variety of issues, including:

  • communication
  • finances
  • sexuality
  • parenting
  • family dynamics
  • managing differences
  • constructive approaches
  • conflict resolution skills
  • anger
  • pressure from extended family members

A couple’s relationship is the executive relationship of the family. As it grows and thrives so does the entire household. We constantly manage and care for the things we value in our lives, for example, our garden, our home, or our children. We know that without nurturing and cultivating them, they will deteriorate.

COUPLE COUNSELLING CAN HELP YOU GROW IN COMMUNICATING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND SUPPORTING EACH OTHER, BRINGING YOU CLOSER TOGETHER.

Group Therapy

By Peaceful Waters has found group therapy an effective way to support people through several issues.

One of the main advantages of working in groups is that we discover we are not alone in our struggles. Our experiences are unique, but many people share the issue itself. It is comforting to know that we are “not the only one”.

When we recognize and share our concerns with others, we can see our situation through different lenses.  The members of the group provide support for each other, which is critical for healing and progress.

Depending on the demand, By Peaceful Waters provides group therapy to deal with issues such as general anxiety, addictions, stress management, self-esteem, depression, and loss/bereavement issues, among others.

Creative Therapy

Unlike traditional ‘talk therapy’ Creative Therapy allows clients to direct their feelings and emotions into their art or music and the art-making process. The goal of Creative therapy is to help you find a form of expression beyond words or traditional therapy. The most commonly used and professionally supported approaches include art, writing, sand play, movement therapy, role-play, and music therapy.

Creative therapy includes techniques that can be used for self-expression and personal growth. In some cases clients may be unable or unwilling to participate in traditional “talk therapy” or may find that they are not fully able to verbally express the source of their distress.

Many children and teens find that creating artwork comes easily, as they are not hindered by the need to get the picture to look “right.” Adults tend to struggle a little more with this, but with some coaching all ages can re-learn this “raw” approach to making art or music. Once trust is formed between the clinician and the client the ability to create images begins to flow.  Then blocked emotions, forgotten memories and life stories often surface in pictures or symbols.

Creative Therapy does not prevent the client from speaking; in fact, it encourages vocalizing when the client is ready.  It can be a powerful tool for those who have experienced trauma.

CREATIVE THERAPY HELPS YOU EXPLORE AREAS YOU ARE STRUGGLING TO ACCESS, VERBALIZE OR WORK THROUGH.  THE PROCESS ITSELF CAN BE VERY HEALING.

Third Culture Kid/Expatriates

Third Culture Kids (TCKs) are individuals who have spent a significant number of their developmental years outside of their passport country. Often the children of diplomats, missionaries, military personnel, or international business people, they experience a highly cross-cultural and highly mobile world. TCKs gain many benefits from this cross-cultural lifestyle, but may also face numerous losses. TCKs often experience challenging questions of belonging and identity, and may have struggle with commitment and social relationships.

Expatriates are adults who live or work internationally. While appreciating the privilege of a global lifestyle, expatriates often face challenges with culture shock, language learning, moving their families and distant social support.

Both TCKs and expatriates can find it difficult to explain the particular challenges of their experiences to someone unfamiliar with their cross-cultural world.

AT BY PEACEFUL WATERS WE HAVE THERAPISTS WITH CROSS-CULTURAL AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE WHO CAN WORK WITH TCKs AND EXPATRIATES BOTH IN PERSON AND VIA SKYPE TOWARD IMPROVED CULTURAL ADJUSTMENT.
