Emotional Regulation Group: Emoticon

Is your child easily overwhelmed with BIG emotions? Do they struggle to stay regulated, experiencing angry outbursts, overwhelm and meltdowns? The good news is that emotional regulation skills can be learned and improved as kids practice over time. This 8-week therapy group in Waterloo that teaches kids how to identify and regulate their feelings in healthy ways using practical strategies. The group takes place in Waterloo where kids meet in person and develop a safe community of support and friendship.

What is Emotional Regulation?

Simply put, emotional regulation is a person’s ability to manage and express one’s emotions in a way that is suitable for and adaptable to the situation they are experiencing.

This means that “regulated” does not always mean “calm.” Instead, it does mean that whether a child is feeling angry,  worried, excited, or happy, they are able to notice the feeling and respond to the emotion in ways that are healthy and helpful.

Emotional regulation skills benefit kids in other ways, too, such as:

  • Confidence
  • Self-Esteem
  • Emotional Resiliency
  • Empathy
  • Improved relationships
Emoticon really helped our child to identify his emotions and view them as messages that his body is telling him. The coping strategies are easy for him to remember when he is in the middle of an emotional situation.

How Do Kids Learn Emotional Regulation Through Emoticon?

Emotional regulation is a skill, which means kids can learn and improve their skills as they practice.

That is the purpose of Emoticon. It is an emotional regulation group in Waterloo for children who are 8-10 years old. It helps kids learn how to name 7 core emotions and process their BIG feelings in healthy ways.

Kids get to have fun while they learn in a safe environment with games and activities, take-home regulation tools and weekly challenges. As an added benefit, children develop greater confidence as they develop new relationships and grow in confidence in social situations.

Parents also attend a one-time session to learn about the program and offer insights about their child. They receive weekly updates with practical tips on how to support their child’s new skills at home.

Emoticon is brilliant! Not all kids cope well with big feelings – so to normalize them and talk about them in an interactive way as well as give tools to continue the conversation at home was amazing for our child.”
